The didgeridoo is perhaps the oldest instrument in the world, with many experts believe to have been played for at least the last 40,000 years. drawings rock older than 2000 years show the didgeridoo playing and it is known that Aborigines in the upper part of Australia have used this instrument at ceremonies and corroborated thousands of years. They think it helps to play induce an alpha state which keeps them in touch with their shamanistic beliefs.
The traditional Aboriginal didgeridoo is made from eucalyptus branches that were dug by termites. This process can take a year and a qualified person can tell if the thickness is correct while typing on the newspaper at your fingertips. Walls must be some thickness to create the sound and the length of the log determines the keys of the instrument will, with shorter lengths giving higher locations.
In Aboriginal legend three men were outside the campsite by a little fire, when the night grew cold. Needing more wood to fire one of the men grabbed a eucalyptus log he found very light touch. Just before launching it into the fire, he noticed it was covered with termites. He did not kill termites, but his friends were complaining about the cold, so he picked them up and placed inside the hollow trunk. He then put his lips on one end and blew. Termites blown into the night sky and the stars became the first didgeridoo was created.
Today, termites are not a necessity and a number of other materials have been found to didgeridoos excellent. Mature bamboo remains extremely popular, works a treat teak with excellent sound quality and even PVC didgeridoos have been the choice preferred by many in recent years.
Playing a didgeridoo is different from other wind instruments. You breathe in the tube while your lips are let go a vibration that will echo that travels along the tube. At the other end, it appears amplified as a drone. It is somewhat similar to playing a tuba, but the lips are more relaxed. If you do not know how to create gossip, think what it means to detonate a "raspberry." Once you've mastered the drone, you can practice other sounds by moving your tongue or cheek while blowing into the instrument.
Although not necessary to play the didgeridoo like a pro, you must learn to breathe circular, and it takes practice. You must breathe air through the nose while freeing the mouth. Without this skill a player will not be able to produce sound favored non-stop.
However, if you do make the effort to learn the didgeridoo, then it seems there may be unexpected benefits. An interesting study in Switzerland is to see how playing the didgeridoo can help stop snoring and sleep apnea. The study following people learning to play has found that people are mastering the art after a few months, has fewer cases of these conditions. We think the breathing necessary to play the didgeridoo is actually training the upper airways function better.
