The Bairro Alto is an area consisting of narrow streets filled with bars, restaurants and small businesses and completely filled the night with locals and dance strangers, eating and drinking. Bairro Alto is ideal for exploring the famous Portuguese "fado" music.

There are several "Fado" bar in this area. The bars change themselves with the days of the week on a regular basis, so keep an eye on signs while walking. Fado music is accompanied by Portuguese guitar and the lyrics were originally improvised by the singer himself. But poems by famous authors, such Luís de Camões, often sung as well.

Fado was compared to the Blues as an original style of song by ordinary people who pay the emotions of their lives difficult in their songs. The origins of the "fado", which literally means "Destiny" is unknown. It can come from Arabs, Gypsies or sailors. Some believe it may have been introduced into Portugal from Brazil in the 19th century. Some examples found in the Bairro Alto Rua das Gáveas, which translates into the street hand-master, or Rua das Salgadeiras, which means the street salting.

Soon Bairro Alto was no longer a suburb of Lisbon, but part of the city itself. It has even become a neighborhood with tradition when the wealthy aristocrat "Andrada" family based "Vila Nova de Andrade" in 1513, a succession by the church São Roque in the Bairro Alto. Their house has attracted other noble parts of the city and the country to pass this quarter. Bairro Alto was even home of royalty. The Infanta Dona Catarina, who was later to become the queen of England and the son of Portuguese King Dom João V have also lived in Bairro Alto.

Over time, the Barrio Alto changed from a wealthy neighborhood of a crowd of ordinary people. However, many wealthy families have not mind the increasing social differences in the quarter and remained residents. Although the district now seems to be a particularly rich area at first glance, the neighborhood still has its mix of rich and poor behind the doors of several houses.

In modern times, Barrio Alto also has ties to the publishing industry. During the 19th and 20th century, the Bairro Alto is the main area for publishing newspaper editorials as "O Século", "A Capital" and "Diario Popular".
