The history of St. Patrick
St. Patrick's Day became a celebration of all things Irish. Most celebrations public include relatively large amounts of alcohol. Many families serve corned beef and cabbage pies, chocolate mint every year on March 17. And some cities like Chicago turn large bodies of water green to commemorate the life of St. Patrick.
"But who was St. Patrick" St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland and is one of the most famous figures in modern Christianity, he was born to British aristocrats in the late Fourth century .. as in most aristocratic families of the time, Patrick as a son later, was destined for the priesthood to make tax incentives for its rich family. When he was 16, he was captured by Irish pirates and held for six years. Meanwhile, it became much more spiritual as he was a lone shepherd and his faith to keep him safe.
After six years in County Mayo, Patrick heard a voice, he thought of God, telling him to leave Ireland (as stated in his writings years later). He walked the Hundreds of miles to the coast where he escaped to Britain. He was then ordained to the priesthood. He returned to Ireland as a priest, like most Irish were pagan at that time.
Patrick time in captivity in Ireland had much influenced and brought many Irish customs to his parishioners. He began to celebrate Easter with a big fire, according to the Irish practice to honor their gods with fire. And he created the Celtic cross by superimposing the image of a sun on the cross. Saint Patrick died in 460 AD and is widely accepted that he died March 17.
As time passed, the legend of St. Patrick grew up around the UK and particularly in Ireland. It is become a figure that was larger than life, and is believed to have made it virtually impossible for many exploits, including expulsion and removal of snakes Druids at Tara. His influence on all Christians in Ireland, but is unmistakable. It can be singularly credited for the spread of Christianity throughout Ireland.
St Patrick's Cathedral in New York cityThe first St. Patrick's Day was celebrated in New York City on March 17, 1762. Irish soldiers serving in the British Army in the American colonies marched through the streets of New York to celebrate their native Ireland where they had long been absent. St. Patrick's Cathedral in Manhattan is a majestic reminder of the history of the Irish people in New York.
As America grew, so did its Irish population. Throughout the late 18th century, the Irish aid societies like the son of Saint Patrick would welcome annual parade that celebrates Saint Patrick. These parades came to include bagpipes and drums, bagpipes, even if we knew more as custom Scottish than Irish.
When the Great Famine of potatoes hit in 1845, nearly a million poor Irish streamed America. Unlike their middle-class Protestant predecessors, these immigrants were Catholic and often uneducated. They found large difficulties in finding work, and have been ridiculed in public and the press as drunken monkeys indecipherable accents. Meanwhile, the feast of St. Patrick's Day has grown considerably more moderate.
In the early 20th century, however, the Irish population in the United States came realize that they were significant in number and were therefore entitled to vote. They started to public opinion and the court has become quite a political machine. When Harry S. Truman attended the New York City St. Patrick's Day parade in 1948, many Irish-Americans knew that they were finally accepted as part of American culture.
In Ireland itself, St. Patrick's Day has traditionally been a festival religious. In fact, until the mid-1970s, Irish law required that all pubs and bars have been closed. In 1995, however, the government Irish began to use St. Patrick as a driver for tourism as people around the world demanded Irish. St. Patrick's Festival in Dublin now attracts over 1 million people in a celebration of several days with parades, concerts and fireworks.
In houses around the world, St. Patrick is celebrated without excess alcohol. Many Irish Catholic families celebrate with a day of prayers. Families cook traditional Irish feast of corned beef (also known as Irish bacon), cabbage and soda bread. Many of these families end the night with a little Coffee Irish cream and a chocolate tart or a cake generously saturated with mint flavoring. These traditions are passed from generation generation, and are revered as much or more than the alcoholic debauchery that is so well known.

The Highland Bagpipe $79.95 The Highland bagpipe, widely considered 'Scotland's national instrument', is one of the most recognized icons of traditional music in the world. It is also among the least understood. However, since the bagpipe’s unprecedented surge in public visibility and scholarly attention since the 1990s, a greater interest in the emic has led the consideration of both the globalization of Highland piping and piping as rooted in local culture. The contributors of this collection discuss the bagpipe in oral and written history, anthropology, ethnography, musicology, material culture and modal aesthetics. The book will appeal to ethnomusicologists, anthropologists, as well as those interested in international bagpipe studies and traditions. |
