The precursors of the oboe family can be traced back to the Sumerian and Egyptian times. In medieval times, the family of instruments called torches double reed instruments were very similar in nature to the modern oboe, but much simpler and with a its crudest.

It was in the 16th and 17th centuries when the oboe as we know it really began to develop. The baroque oboe was at that time, often referred to as the "Oboe" from the French "High Wood" high sense of wood. This is Hoboy become corrupt and that the name evolved modern oboe.
