The saxophone is among the most popular musical instruments in the woodwind family available in a saxophone shop. Invented by the Belgian musician Adolphe Sax in 1841, the saxophone consists of a family of instruments which was originally intended for use in military bands. Many improvements were incorporated into Adolphe's invention after its patent expired in 1866, further adding to the popularity of the saxophone many models of which are now sold online. For instance, the flaring bell at the instrument's end was lengthened slightly to extend the sax's range lower and extra keys were added to make playing of the saxophone less difficult.
To buy saxophone online would now typically entail choosing among models with between 20 and 23 different sized holes placed at intervals along a conical tube of thin brass metal with a flared tip that forms into a bell. Keys or pad cups cover these holes which are controlled by the left and right fingers through a number of buttons. Playing the saxophone has similarities with fingering the oboe, flute and the clarinet. It is also possible to use a sax to play parts of musical pieces written for string bass, bassoon, trombone or tuba through a technique called clef substitution. Such versatility is useful for bands or ensembles which lack any of those instruments. The versatile saxophone, thus, is now one of the most common instruments played to dish out popular music, jazz, rock and roll, blues, and of course that from its original turf, the big bands.
The most commonly used sax in marching bands are the alto saxophones which have also gained favor in jazz, blues, pop and rock music. Medium-sized, the alto sax comes in a "J" shape curved backwards though some models are straight and slightly taper to a bell their tips. The alto is the most recommended saxophone for beginners because of its more manageable size and shape.
Another medium-sized member of the sax family are the tenor saxophones. Their sound are deeper compared to the alto sax, and these instruments come in a slightly larger mouthpiece, ligature and reed. These saxophones have a pronounced crook in its neck that leads to the mouthpiece, making them markedly different from the altos. Jazz music is the genre that launched the popularity of the tenor saxophone, mainly through the pioneering efforts of Coleman Hawkins during the 1930s. Because of this popularity, the instrument played an important part in the later development of other music genres such as rhythm and blues, rock and roll, and rock music.
The third, in terms of size, in the sax family is the soprano. Soprano saxophones could either be curved or straight. The curved sopranos were typically of the 1930s vintage, and are favored by some musicians for their richer and more sax-like sound. On the other hand, the straight sopranos are reputed for their oboe-like sound and better intonation than their curved kin. In general, this type of sax is best reserved for the more advanced players as it is more difficult to learn and master. With enough training, however, the soprano is one exciting instrument especially for jazz and classical renditions.
