Oboe Beginners - Choosing an instrument

For a beginner oboe player, the first step in the learning process is a rather obvious - to buy an instrument to play. There are a number of issues to consider in choosing ideal. These could probably be divided into three main areas: - the type of instrument, the cost of the instrument and the brand of instrument.

Instrument Type: There are two main systems of fingering for oboe. These are the "Thumb-Plate System" and the Conservatory " System. "Most of the fingerings are identical, but there are just some differences in C & Bb fingerings in the middle of the instrument. I will not go into detail on this here. Your best bet is to see a player who will be able to demonstrate both systems. In the UK the vast majority of players use the thumb-plate system while on the continent of Europe no longer use the Conservatory. Each country tends to have its own "school" of the oboe will focus on one or the other systems. Ultimately, it is not really important that both systems have their strengths and weaknesses. You will find that people who play on the system demand Conservatory she is the best and those who play on the thumb plate make a similar request.
