Professional musicians pick Buffet clarinets mostly because they have amazing response and a terrific sound, but also because they know that Buffet has been making clarinets for almost 200 years. In 1825 in the heart of Paris, Denis Buffet-Auger set up shop and started making clarinets that were very well received. The company rapidly became known for the excellent craftsmanship involved in creating clarinets, which were crafted painstakingly by hand. Son Jean-Louis Buffet took over the company in 1830, along with his wife Zoe Crampon and maintained and even improved upon the company's reputation for making the best instruments.

Buffet and Crampon remained at the leading edge of instrument crafting, a tradition that continues. The company logo used today was first used in 1844. One of the top men at the company, Louis-Auguste Buffet, who was Jean-Louis' uncle, began working with Hyacinthe Klose, a virtuoso who taught at the Paris Conservatory. As a craftsman-musician team, the two improved upon the design of the clarinet, introducing movable rings, which had only been done in the flute before. By 1850 Buffet and Crampon built a factory in Mantes-la-Ville to keep up with greatly increased demand. In 1918, they entered the American market and rapidly became a worldwide leader in professional clarinet production.

Buffet Clarinets are well loved by music teachers because of their great response, accuracy, and beautiful tone. Some models are made from Grenadilla wood, a unique wood found in Mozambique and Tanzania that is known for its wonderful resonance. They are available with silver-plated keywork, adjustable thumbrest, and all the standard accessories such as a hard shell case, mouthpiece, cleaning swab, and ligature. The warranty on these instruments is 10 years.
