Google's challenge - "Think Big with a concert"

This network will enable transmission speeds of over 1 Gbps. This means increase of about 100 times the average speed of broadband Internet in the United States. Development of high-speed Internet transmission is based on concepts Google's new businesses, including IPTV.
Although many experts believe that Google will not build infrastructure on its own initiative and not use the network of one of the main operators (Verizon, Comcast, AT & T, Qwest), the return is a challenge for all Internet service providers and a reference point.
Philip Santoro, a spokesman for Verizon, referring to Google's slogan "Think Big with a concert, said: "We do not compete with the things [Google] planning ... They may think to compete with the things we already have. We have the network in place today. "These words were uttered at the end of August, after the launch Verizon's first commercial gigabit link in Massachusetts.

The hopes of rapid development of the service are linked to the fact that this commitment is based on the Verizon FiOS existing operating on the network of fiber optic communications, and the practical speed of 800 Mbps have been achieved over a distance about 650 km. The devices employees use GPON technology (see paragraph below) and come from Motorola (theoretical upstream of 1.2 Gbit / s, downstream of 2.4 Gbit / s).
In autumn and early next year, many operators plan to start commercial services of Internet gigabit but also in Europe - it seems that the "provocation" the motto of Google gave a positive result - an acceleration of the deployment of optical networks the next generation - FTTH.

• Optical Network Unit (UN) - optical networking equipment in the local distribution point.

If the optical link goes directly to the end user (FTTH), it includes optical network termination (ONT).

Classification of PON:

• ON (PON ATM)
• BPON (Broadband PON),
• GPON (Gigabit PON)
• EPON (Ethernet PON).

GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network) is currently the most popular technology used for optical bridge the "last mile". GPON offers many transfer rates possible, but now the most popular choice is 2.488 Gbit / s (downstream) and 1.244 Gbit / s (upstream).
