Soccer Branding: The history of European football in Nigeria
Branding Soccer: History European football in Nigeria
By Eric Okeke
European football has a considerable impact in Nigeria, have captivated and the attention of soccer fans, young and young at heart, affecting the way Nigerians relax, and initiate business opportunities for smart entrepreneurs.
And the history of this brand of football is that the club support, fun, entertainment, games and business In Nigeria, although the game is played thousands of miles. For Nigerians, football is the game and entertainment; football clubs and players are registered, while Looking at the matches is the enterprise.
Major brands of European football to make waves in Nigeria, championships, and English Premier League. Whenever teams in these competitions to engage in competitive soccer for a cup, Nigerian fans are in love. It is as if the match is played in Nigeria.
Some fans are strong in their support of the clubs they love. Come see the campaigns in Nigeria to these clubs before a crucial match. Sometimes it is fanatical. And in many cases, this results in fights and big fights between supporters of different clubs in Europe.
Support Clubs sometimes goes beyond the ordinary. At times, emotions run high. The big names are Manchester United, Barcelona, Chelsea, Arsenal, Real Madrid, AC Milan, and others. For these football clubs, the images are important in Nigeria, and they command large followership of fans who are still willing to exchange blows, fight, or engage in lively discussions in support of their clubs. The impact of European football in Nigeria is so intense it shapes the way soccer fans to relax in the midst of fun, food and beverages.
Two European clubs that most mob supporters in Nigeria are Manchester United (Man U) and Chelsea. And the curious observer of the profile of these fans will see a clear separation or stratification in terms of class social, education, income and power. How?
Man U has captivated the fanatical support of the middle class, professional and above, who flat screen televisions at home, and subscribe to cable television. And after all win by this football club, you will hear screams of, Man U for life! by enthusiastic fans. It is followed by crowded taverns and pepper soup joints in most Nigerian cities to celebrate victories. When they got there and savor the victory, fans waved you hear stories both on the game, telling all sorts of rigorous analysis and not the speech of the game just played. After every big match, there are many stories of football in Nigeria.
Chelsea, second is in total control of the mass, the lower class, the boys in the street, the car park touts, unemployed youth and street kids known as poplularly Boys region, the metropolis of Lagos, Nigeria. They are more numerous, are fanatical in their support for Chelsea, and are even willing to die for the team.
Whenever Man U faces Chelsea in a big game, there is tension in Lagos, even before the match day. The final UEFA Cup in 2007 or 2008 (I am not sure of the year now) between Man U and Chelsea has been a storm in a teacup in Lagos.
Seven days before the match, the tension was palpable in Lagos. Who will win the match? The big question raised intense debate throughout the city and sometimes resulted to combat pre-match between Man U and Chelsea fans in Nigeria. Sports newspapers increased the tempo as they soaked supporters of both clubs with interviews, latest news and rave reviews of the preparation of the clubs, players, fitness, and strategies for the final.
Man U will win, we About Man U for life! Supporters Club will be singing to the chagrin of the Chelsea fans that respond loudly with Chelsea Up! Chelsea fans Lagos outnumber singers Man U for life. Chelsea fans are everywhere in the streets, markets and car fleets. Over 80 percent of drivers commercial bus Lagos are die-hard Chelsea fans. And they are very strong. They may reject all prudence and the fight around with bottles, stones, objects dangerous, especially if they are high on the smell of tobacco and alcohol.
Not so with Man U fans They are more cultured, better educated and work among blue collar and white collar. They are more gentle and refined in their behavior football, but also fanatical in their support for Man U, where slogan, Man U for life, a clear indication that they are not willing to change their European brand loyalty club, if man wins or not. And in many cases, Man U wins.
Back to the epic Man U / Chelsea final. Twenty-four hours for the match, the entire city of Lagos was drowned by the fever of the game. There were unconfirmed reports of clashes between supporters of both clubs in different regions Lagos. Bus drivers and conductors were beaten, radio stations filled the air with the pre-match comments and interactive programs for listeners to express their opinions on the match result.
Man U vs. Chelsea was in the air so thick that many residents waiting forward to the game come and go. game day, fans crowded the clinics and salons of beer to watch the game. If you want to enjoy the view European soccer championship in Nigeria, do not watch at home. Go to a visualization center and sit with overzealous fans and listen all kinds of stories and analysis as the match progresses. You can write a book full of stories. tales of football is high in Nigeria.
It is the story of a fan of Manchester United at home in Lagos, Nigeria, watching the football game epic final with Chelsea. Suddenly there was a power outage. He has no emergency generator to power his television. Desperate not to miss any action in the game, he launched into a hotel that has an observation center. Unfortunately, the place was invaded by fans of Chelsea.
He burst in the center, shouting Man U for life. Chelsea fans he promptly thrown out. Man U went on to win that match to the chagrin of the Chelsea fans. Oh! Hell dropped almost in Lagos metropolis. Man U fans celebrated, but in a moderate tempo, because the supporters of Chelsea came close on the rampage. So blame much by the fans of Chelsea. Oh! The arbitrator was partial, there was not enough extra time, Didier Drogba did not play well enough; much blame, but the fact remains that Man U has won on penalties after both teams were level at the end of extra time.
Come see Celebrations by Man U fans. Three days later they were still celebrating. Even married women joined the fray. A madam, Man U supporter opened his restaurant and customers offered, ostensibly Man U fans, free drinks. Fever Man U is very high in Nigeria. To say that Chelsea fans have been disappointed ... ... that is being charitable ... bitter ... yes, because it was the first time, I was told, their beloved club became very close to winning the UEFA Cup. And they missed.
Even support for European clubs trickles down to families, sometimes disturbing the peace at home, causing friction among children and create challenges for parents in managing the support of their children European football clubs
Take the story of my family of four son (aged 17, 15 and 10) and a daughter who is five, and do not yet know any club. Chidubem my first son is an ardent supporter of Liverpool. Entering her room, you see a life size poster image of the whole Team Liverpool pasted on the wall. The second boy, Chibuzor, is a fanatical supporter of Barca. I had never heard the name. When I asked him what club is that he promptly told me: "Dad, you're late," a chuckle. "Who is Barca," I asked in astonishment. "Barca Barcelona means, he replied" My son taught me that. I'm going. Chika the youngest boy loves Chelsea.
Every time their favorite team wins or loses, just see the excitement in my house. It could be jubilation, if it is a victory, or being teased by her brothers others, if it is a waste. If the match is in Liverpool, Barca or Chelsea, there are fights in my house, so serious that at times I threaten discipline them if they continue to disturb the peace at home. The youngest boy Chika is always the receiving end. If Chelsea Liverpool or Barca wins, the boy is struggling. Big brothers can even bend if I or their mother is not there. On one occasion, they ran after him to beat him, and he rushed me to the current rescue. I did. If Chelsea loses, Oh! Come see the ridicule of big brothers. In this situation, I usually calm Chika, assuring him that Chelsea will win another day. Such is the impact of European football on Nigerian families, sometimes polarizing members of the family.
It is not only the European clubs that are celebrated in Nigeria. The players are too revered. Big names like Didier Drogba, David Beckham, Thanks, Christian Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and many others are revered. They are not only marks Soccer high in Nigeria, they are idols. Nigerian youths see them as status symbols and patterns. The average teenager Nigeria has large images of superstars European football's stuck in their rooms. Nigerian youths know the travel and transfer of European football stars much more than that Nigerian football also stars playing in European clubs.
The history of European football brands is not only play. It's also business. People play before games, some even in Paris. Display centers are emerging everywhere in Lagos equipped Flat screen TV and connected to cable TV channels. Game devices are displayed on blackboards planted on the sidewalks of the street to the attention passersby. These centers charge entrance fees for fans who want to watch football matches.
Some hotels and reception facilities have joined the fray to show these games to attract more patronage. Many of them on game days to put the flat screen TV exposed to the air for free consultation. But every boss is watching the game need to buy drinks.
But the clinics are running into trouble now with DSTV, the cable TV company in Africa that has the right to vote in the beam of these matches football in Africa. DSTV wants clinics to pay fees or royalties to the company because they charge money for soccer fans to match. The position of the cable company is that the channel is for entertainment at home by subscribers, and if costs boss money for viewing, the person or company must pay something to DSTV. The clinics crying foul, saying that squeeze to retire. A confrontation is imminent.
In addition, there are many sports shirts memories ... T ... Photos ... Wall Papers ... Give aways and other items consumption of sports stars of European football and their clubs are sold in Nigeria. It is a great company. And there are many journals devoted exclusively to football. They come in different shades of tabloids, are less expensive than mainstream newspapers, and are very popular with young love football to follow the fortunes of their favorite players and clubs. However, loyalty club does not stop them to love a player, and sometimes they want the player they like sign-on for their favorite clubs. Thank you, the young Barcelona player is loved by the young Nigerian. They like its small size and clever moves in the field of play. Young Nigerians believe that the boy was gifted Argentine football sense. Ditto for the Brazilian, Ronaldinho.
And then when you see the European football on the air, remember that fever is very high in Nigeria.

Ethics of Eros $45.48 "Ethics of Eros" sheds light on contemporary feminist discourse by bringing into question some of the basic distinctions and categories that orchestrate it. The work of Luce Irigaray serves as a focus for interrogating the opposition between "French" and "Anglo-American" feminism as articulated in the debate over essentialism. Tina Chanter defends Irigaray against charges of essentialism by showing that such criticisms fail to consider the theoretical background of her work. Chanter demonstrates that Irigaray inherited and attempted to move beyond the philosophical framework of Hegel, Nietzsche, Heidegger, Derrida, and Levinas. In tackling the debate over essentialism, Chanter also reconsiders the sex/gender distinction that has been fundamental to feminist theory. "Ethics of Eros" seeks to recast the differences between "French" and "Anglo-American" feminism so that they no longer represent opposing views but become capable of productive exchanges. It explains the circumstances in which the debate over essentialism arose and reveals how essentialist misreadings of Irigaray gained currency in feminist theory. The book illuminates Irigaray's writings and demonstrates the insights they hold for current feminist theory and philosophy. |
