January 5 - Renato Carosone and his band start their American tour in Cuba.
January 6 - Elvis Presley makes final appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show.
January 16 - The Cavern Club opened in Liverpool, England
Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel name themselves Tom and Jerry and begin their recording career, with the signing of Sid Prosen of Big Records. Their first single, "Hey Schoolgirl," based on "Dancin 'Wild", press # 49 on the Billboard pop charts. Garfunkel was Tom graphic (so called because he likes to write the pop charts on graph paper) and Simon was Jerry Landis, a pseudonym he used during his first solo recordings of the 1960s. They visited eighteen months before retiring to become students Colleges and reform in 1963, Simon and Garfunkel.
February 8 - Bo Diddley records his songs "Hey Bo Diddley" and "Mona" (aka "I Need You Baby").
March - Chicago Cardinal Stritch banned all rock and roll and rhythm and Blues in the schools run by Catholics, saying that "its rhythms encourage young people to behave hedonist."
March 3 - The second edition of the Eurovision Song Contest takes place in Frankfurt am Main, West Germany. The competition was won by Corry Brokken Dutch singer with Net als Toen song.

When Nat King Cole television show was unable to find a sponsor, Frankie Laine was the first artist to cross the color line of the TV. Become the first white artist to appear as a client, the above his regular salary of $ 10,000.00 as a supplier Cole show only paid scale. Other more powerful suit, including Mel Torme and Tony Bennett but despite an increase in ratings, the show is still unable to pick up a national sponsor.
