Flute Gold

There are so many craft beers to find in America. For Philadelphians, the local fare offers them an even broader range of choices than your typical small-town beer lover can enjoy. One of their most interesting breweries in the entire Philly metropolitan area is Earth Bread & Brewery. They make not only beers, but also that historic, international staple of human sustenance: flatbread. It's fantastic, but the real topic here is the beer.

Their American Pale Wheat Ale is a light 4% ABV called Terra Fume. It pours a crystalline, coppery gold with a thin, white head. It dissipates quickly and laces in bits. The aroma is sweet and wheaty up front, with hints of toastiness and subtle smoked malts and a floral hint or two. The taste has the same bready body, balanced by some hoppy bitterness and the smokiness of the malts at the finish.

Their American Stout is a 4.5% ABV called Joe's Coffee Stout. It pours a deep dark brown with a transparent clarity. It tops with a pale tan head that laces decently. The smell hits with its scorched bean body, with hints of toast and a light bready yeast whiff. It finishes with bits of chocolate and vanilla at the end. The taste is a bit more simple. The coffee, vanilla and chocolate steal the show, and finish with a subtle hint of yeast.

What they offer in the way of Belgian IPAs is an 8.7% ABV called Bell Hop. It pours a strong orange hue with some lighter marbling throughout. It tops with a thin creamy head that sticks around for quite a while, but dissipates after some time. The bouquet has a spicy yeast touch with a fruity citrus body and an overall sweetness. The tongue introduces notes of cinnamon. Bananas shine through over the citrusy fruits, and it finishes with a whiff of honey-sweetened hops and yeast.

Earth Bread & Brewery has plenty of other beers to explore, and it has a wide selection of hearty flatbreads to compliment (and absorb) their daring beers.
