Goose Down, What It Is

Often when we hear the word "Down" or goose down, is associated with the feathers of a goose. In reality, the feathers are not considered authentic at all.

On the body of the goose, next to the skin, fibers are very sweet and commonly called "clusters". These groups do not have quills and feathers below the main geese, which are used for flying. They are mainly found on the chest and abdomen of the bird. As the cluster communicate with each other strongly, they trap heat and gives the bird warmth and insulation protection. These soft natural fibers (clusters) are breathable and moisture to evaporate quickly. This protection Nature gives the bird its ability to withstand the harshest conditions and temperature fluctuations.

Using goose down, the bedding industry has been able to create many products for every season. When goose down is used in comforters, pillows, or throws the body heat in winter in clusters and allows the summer heat to evaporate moisture, thus having a cooling effect.

Goose Low insulating capability is called "power fill 'that. Fill power is a measure of the loft or "fluffiness" in a product down. Normally, fill power is measured by the number of cubic inches per ounce (in3/oz). High fill power down (800-900) will isolate a lot better than the low filling low power (about 300) of the same weight. A charging power from anywhere from 400 to 800 is plenty for most applications bedding. The higher powers of filling is usually found in outdoor clothing.

Goose down is one of the best natural insulators on earth, is environmentally friendly and biodegradable. It can take up to 4 times longer than synthetics.
