A bagpipe chanter is the part of the bagpipe that produces the melody. It is usually a narrow tube and conical with a series of small holes. These holes are alternately covered and uncovered to control the pitch produced by the torch. At the top of the bagpipe chanter is the reed.
Bagpipe chanters usually consist two main divisions: the parallel and non-parallel bored. The first allows the pipes to produce a soft tone while the second allows the control volume in the pipes.
Wood or resin?
Wooden chanters are solid, durable wood such as African Blackwood, Cocobola, or rosewood. They are generally in the key of concert pitch D and the key of B and are generally awarded to the key of A in 440 Hz Most wooden chanters have key blocks for adding brass keys and mounts usually made of maple and synthetic ivory.
Meanwhile, a bagpipe chanter resin is made from durable resin and comes in the key of concert pitch D and the key of B. They are generally granted to the key of A at 440 Hz singers resin are ideal for beginners and advanced players.
To Beginners
Practice chanters are mainly used for playing Great Highland Bagpipe. It is smaller than the bagpipe chanter and has a typical top that can be breathed directly from the mouth. It is usually used by beginners so they do not control control mechanisms of the bag. practice chanters are usually made of hardwood or plastic.
Tips
Bagpipe chanters when buying, look for those that have a plastic blowgun. Plastic straws are robust and do not crack easily. In addition, plastics are not vulnerable to moisture and extreme temperature changes can cause torch to crack.

The Highland Bagpipe $79.95 The Highland bagpipe, widely considered 'Scotland's national instrument', is one of the most recognized icons of traditional music in the world. It is also among the least understood. However, since the bagpipe’s unprecedented surge in public visibility and scholarly attention since the 1990s, a greater interest in the emic has led the consideration of both the globalization of Highland piping and piping as rooted in local culture. The contributors of this collection discuss the bagpipe in oral and written history, anthropology, ethnography, musicology, material culture and modal aesthetics. The book will appeal to ethnomusicologists, anthropologists, as well as those interested in international bagpipe studies and traditions. |

Dance to the Piper: The Highland Bagpipe in Nova Scotia $20.01 Barry Shears examines the history and traditions of Gaelic-speaking pipers whose emigration to Nova Scotia ensured that the role and music of Highland piping not only survived, but thrived for a long time. Dance to the Piper provides historical background and provides numerous biographical sketches of key figures in the Nova Scotia tradition and analyzes why this cultural reality endured in Nova Scotia. It also examines the social, economic and cultural developments which altered the status, role and perception of the piper in society, and their eventual decline. Shears shows an abiding respect for those tradition bearers and Dance to the Piper represents more than twenty years of research, interviews and recordings of the last of the traditional-style pipers in Nova Scotia. |
