Highland Bagpipes

Sir James Matthew Barrie was born in Kirriemuir, Angus, Scotland, May 9, 1860. It was the ninth of 10 children. When his older brother David is died in an accident on ice skating at a young age, his mother was devastated and went into a deep depression. JM is trying to console her by wearing clothes of his brother. Her mother said that was a comfort, knowing that David would be a boy forever and never grow. This obviously played a important role in the life of Barrie.

Barrie went to school and became interested in theater. He played often "Pirates" with children from other schools. He studied at Edinburgh University, where he wrote reviews Theatre for a local newspaper. He moved to London to become a freelance writer and soon turned his attention to writing dramatic. The first appearance of Peter Pan was in The Little White Bird in 1901.

Barrie married actress Mary Ansell in 1891. They met when she was recommended for a part in one of his plays. They married, but had no children. Mary had an affair and refused to stop it. JM has granted him a divorce.

The inspiration for Peter Pan was said to come to tell stories and play games with the Llewelyn Davies family. James had met the boys while walking his dog in the park. He then met with their mother, Sylvia, at a dinner and they became friends. James often spent time with family, especially after the death of the boys' father, Arthur. It is became "Uncle Jimmy" son of Sylvia 5. It was considered somewhat scandalous at the time. Sylvia died a few years later, "Uncle Jimmy" became a tutor for the boys.

His greatest success was Peter Pan - T he Boy Who Would not Grow Up. The performance was the first major step in December 1904. The play was so successful that it was adapted in many films, musicals, and more. Live performances of the play have never failed to get the audience applause to save Tinkerbell's life. Barrie has signed over copyright to Peter Pan to Great Ormond Street Hospital in London in 1929. A statue Peter Pan "magically" appeared one night in 1912 in Kensington Gardens, where Barrie would spend time with the Llewelyn Davies children.

Barrie died of pneumonia in June 1937. He is buried in Kirriemuir beside his parents. His birthplace is now a museum.
