Poetry has been written on practically every subject, but there is none so popular as a love that has somehow gone wrong. Such poetry describing a troubled relationship has been around since the days of Shakespeare, when he wrote Romeo and Juliet. People who have experienced love affairs with unreconciled troubles can easily be inspired to write poetry in order to communicate their feelings and experiences. One of the best things about writing poetry about troubled relationships is that in many ways, it helps the author who just had the bad experience, to "get it all out." The printed word is therapeutic not only for the writer but also the reader in that it seeks to bridge an idea or concept across the masses. Below are some reasons how writing about troubled relationships in poetic form can benefit the writer:
1. While the experience the writer underwent may make him or her feel as if it could only happen to him or her, that person in reality is not alone; other people have also had the same experience at some point in their lives.
2. Feelings can frequently be better expressed through the printed word than in speech. For many people it can be difficult to express exact feelings directly to another person while standing in front of them. Poetry is a great way to utilize and describe these feelings, especially during times when a bad experience can actually keep a person from wanting to communicate in any way to friends or family.
3. The written piece does not have to be perfect, in fact, it can be from traditional rhyming form to free-form experimental poetry. Being a master of the English language is not a requirement for such writing.
4. The writer can mention how only one aspect of the relationship went wrong, or go into depth about the entire experience from day one upon meeting the person, becoming friends, falling in love, then evaluating what went wrong. Or, just the worst part of the experience can be written about: the possibility of breaking up.
5. The converse can also happen: the poetry can also provide a means to mend the relationship.
For example, if the subject of the poem is read by the person it is meant for, that can easily open up a communication line between that person and the author of the poem. If this should happen, then the possibility for the relationship to grow strong again is increased.
Troubled relationship poetry can be interpreted by other readers in many ways. If the writer uses obvious imagery, it can lead to an open discussion in a classroom setting, especially if the writer is a famous poet, like Emily Dickinson. As with any poetry, troubled relationship poetry can have a personal meaning for anyone who reads it.
