Choosing a Ceilidh Band for your wedding in Scotland!
A good way to add a touch of Scotland to your wedding is to have a Ceilidh dance.
Scottish Ceilidh Dancing is one of the more exciting, exhilarating, and fun to dance in the world! It's fast, bright, and it does not matter if you have two left feet or three! You dance like you've never danced before and feel you have wings your heels!
What is a Ceilidh?
A Ceilidh (pronounced "Kay-lee") used to designate an informal gathering or visiting friends and neighbors. However, these days in Scotland, it means a Ceilidh dance where everyone can get on the dance floor and enjoy themselves.
What is a Ceilidh band?
The modern, traditional Scottish ceilidh group is composed violin, accordion and drums, but these days, the line up may be more eclectic with other tools such as penny whistle, mandolin, piano great Scottish drum and even the bagpipes! There are no rules regarding the line up, so pick your favorite band.
Is some people are left out?
Not at all. Ceilidh dancing (as opposed to strict, formal Scottish Country Dancing) can be considered more inclusive than many other dance forms because the dances are easy to learn and fun. Everyone can participate, regardless of age and experience.
That's the way, there is less chance of one person or child (or person whose spouse cranky "will not dance") at a wedding or function be excluded from the dance. Some dances are for couples (With many changes of partners!) But many others are groups of people. So everyone can participate!
But we do not know the steps!
Many people are concerned that some guests will be ignored because they unaware of the stages of Scottish Ceilidh Dance. However, exactly the opposite is true. Most good bands can be a "caller" who will go on the steps before each dance and "Call" steps in the dance. This is part of the fun.
Do not worry not!
So do not worry. With a good Ceilidh band and calling all your guests will soon "hooching," "setting" and "drop up stakes with the best of them. And if they are wrong, do not worry! This is also part of the fun and there will always be a friendly neighbor to "push" them in the right direction. A Ceilidh is a gathering of folk where everyone is encouraged to participate and everyone is helping each other. This is a great-ice breakers.
We live abroad and want a ceilidh band!
If you can Ceilidh not find a group, then at least try to find a wedding ring which may play a Gay Gordons and The Strip the Willow. If not, ask if they could they play music from CDs or iPod. Then find someone from a Scottish company who could dance come along and call the dances to learn instruct you and keep you right when you dance. The caller can provide the music too.
