Easter Island - explore the 'unknown'
A Polynesian island in the south-east Pacific Ocean at the most south-eastern Polynesian Triangle, Easter Island is a special territory of Chile, which annexed it in 1888.
It one of the most isolated islands in the world but 1200 years ago a canoe filled double hull seafarers a distant culture landed upon its shores. Over the centuries that followed a remarkable society developed in isolation on the island. For reasons still unknown, they started carving giant statues of volcanic rock. These monuments, known as "moai" are some of the oldest relics ever found amazing. The inhabitants of Easter Island called themselves the Rapa Nui. Where did they come from and why have they disappeared??
How Island gets its name?
There are several hypotheses as to the "original" Polynesian name for Easter Island, including Te pito o te Henua, which means "the navel of the earth" or "The ends of the earth." Pito means both the umbilical cord navel and was considered to be the link between the living world (Kainga) and Po the spirit world, located in the depths of the ocean eastward. Since Easter Island is the easternmost island of Polynesia, it is possible the name refers to what it is the "end" of the living world, but after Alfonso Pinart translated as "the navel of the world" in his Voyage to Easter Island published in 1877, this second meaning has been lost. According to some oral traditions, the island was called Te Pito o te Hau Kainga a Maka or small piece "of land of Hau Maka". Another name, Mata-ki-Te-Rangi, meaning "looking towards the sky. "
In-brief:
Science has learned much about the mystery of Easter Island and has put to rest some of the theories cleaner, but questions and controversies remain ...
