Background: my reason for writing this article
The piccolo is an interesting member of the family of instruments known as wood. It has the highest degree of all the instruments in a modern orchestra. Most people easily recognize the piccolo in band music such as John Philip Sousa "The Stars and Stripes Forever, piccolo solo or riding above all other instruments and creates a melody cons almost like a whistle. It Because of this extreme height it is of paramount importance for building beautiful tone.
I play the flute. My range starts the concert, or "average" C, and moves up to three octaves. Although both piccolo and notes are written in the same place on the treble staff, the piccolo sounds an octave higher than the flute. Therefore, it is understood that the range starts on D, one octave above middle C and also moves up to three octaves.
One of the first things I learned the flute was that most critics will be directed to my tone. It everything about you: good tone, pure tone, gloss and tone control. Third tone octave is the most difficult.
I also write music flute. Recently I wrote a piece that really suits them the piccolo. So now I want to learn to play the piccolo, too. It which brings me to the study of tone on the piccolo.
Specific techniques for developing your
1. Use a mirror to check the alignment and tension.
It took me long before I wanted to try. Once I did, and I began to hear an improvement in my game, I decided it was a good technique! When you use the mirror, you begin to see the shape of your mouth and how he sits on the lip plate. It is so easy to switch from one side of the mouth and do not feel it!
Then check the position of the arm, noting there is electricity in the shoulders and neck.
Do not play a Note! Just look at your position. Close your eyes and see how it feels to hold the instrument in a relaxed state.
2. Play notes with the mirror.
Close your eyes and start to play a pleasant note long. Let me start with G or A in the first octave. Listen to yourself play, then open your eyes to see if you are still in good position and relaxed.
If you are successful on a note, make two or three on a scale or arpeggio. Play the first notes, eyes closed. Then, while you continue to play, open your eyes to check your alignment.
3. Find a way to register.
No excuses. Find a way. Buy a digital recorder. Get a microphone in your computer. Do whatever it takes to record and play yourself. Save a record every 1-2 months, so you'll be able to go back and look your progress.
Record the same song or exercise for at least a month. The song or exercise should not over a minute long. Of This way you can get a good comparison when you listen. You can listen to all your recordings at the end of the month and either reject them or to define one side for future comparisons.
Tips for good record:
1. Always warm up before recording.
2. Place the microphone two to four meters away.
3. Announce the date before playing.
4. Keep the music simple enough that you can relax.
5. Focus on slow, gentle notes rather than fast and short.
There are many more ways to work on tone but if you start with these techniques, you'll be well on your way to play beautiful music on the piccolo, wood, extraordinary.
Janet Bordeaux has been involved with music her entire life. Her mother spent 35 years as a member of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra, so Janet has grown up listening to classical music. Six years ago she decided to explore playing flute. Now she composes for flute and more recently has begun to compose for piccolo as well. She has produced a book of seven compositions for flute with piano accompaniment and a suite for solo piccolo or flute.
