Many of the popular diet programs advertised on the market today boast the glycemic index to help dieters to lose weight. NutriSystem has built its popular "Feeding" system around the low glycemic index.
The glycemic index has been developed in 1981. It ranks carbohydrates according to their immediate effect on blood sugar. The scale measures from 1 to 100 foods.
Carbohydrates that break down slowly during digestion have a low glycemic index.
Carbohydrates that break down quickly during digestion have a high glycemic index.
The low GI foods is less than 55 years, the average volume is 55 to 69, while high GI foods rates above 70.
Index glucose is not in itself a perfect measure of a healthy diet. Some vegetables appear to have a high GI, while foods high in fat a low GI. It is therefore important to also consider carbohydrates and saturated fats.
Clearly, a potato chip with a low score GI is less healthy than legumes and nuts, whose rating is higher GI.
What does this mean for dieters?
- You feel full longer. The low GI foods fill you faster and the feeling of hunger is satisfied for a longer period of time.
- Prolonged physical endurance resulting in increased energy to exercise or go about your daily activities.

How Did you move to a low GI diet?
- Eat cereals rich in oats, barley and bran.
- Eating bread with seeds.
- Enjoy all types of fruits and vegetables (Excluding potatoes).
- Eat plenty of vegetables salad dressing (not creamy) dressing.

However, the glycemic index is a good indication for a healthy diet. Try to eat a low GI food at each meal. Limit processed refined starches, cut out junk food, and salt, alcohol and caffeine.
