If you're a young musician who wants to break into the world of West End theater orchestras, where to start?
It is impossible to walk in a West End pit job (or "Chair") without any previous experience. Therefore, your first task is to replace existing players in a show.
It may come as a surprise that players Chair would need an assistant. One might expect a chair holder to play at every performance, but there is an unwritten rule that says players can take a show off. It would perhaps because they have other commitments made before being offered the show. I first depped in the West End because the player keyboard in the show Me and My Girl was also the assistant director of music, and needed to make at least one show per week.
If you want to substitute as a musician in musical theater heaven, put yourself in the mind of the player you want to work with orchestra. If a comedy music player needs a theater orchestra dep (and they do quite often), there are at least seven things they look for in a musician.
1. Can you do the job? The West End is the arena to play in the orchestra pit musical theater. The players are, without exception, very good in what they do. Are you the standard of the others? When you click on the West End, everyone expects you to be able to play the notes in time, in harmony and style - it's a fact. You must show that you can play instruments, play music and be part of the whole existing with minimum hassle.
2. Will you have over other players? Keep in mind that the musician you are Depping for not being there when you work in the pit. If in your first show as a dep, you annoy the people around you, you will not be prompted again. Getting your colleagues is also vital that you begin your sponsorship musician. Do you fit into the social structure? The work is also important in moments of rest that the moments of reading. If you can show that for the musician that you are for Depping, you're halfway there.
3. Can you sightread superbly? You'll probably sight reading or playing music in the very short term - Make sure you can do that (and still counting bars of course). Most members budding in the West End first musician sitting next to the sponsorship in the pit once or twice. They then dep the next day or later that week, or sometimes a month later. When you sit in the pit next to your player sponsorship, input or review difficult or exposed solos. Your game will judged on those later!
4. Fixer you know? West End musical theater are still employed by a fixative MU approved by the orchestra. It is not possible to work as a musician in a West End show elsewhere (in fact it is illegal). Therefore, you must be known not only for the player, but as the fixer. See the list of fixers (Musicians' Union can give you a list), and with them also. If the fixator to hear from you different sources (personal approach or a recommendation by another player), you are more likely to get a foot on the ladder dep. In my own case as a pianist, things are slightly different in that I got my name around without a fixative, such as piano soloist and rehearsal - but Once I had two books on fixers, I have been working for six years without playing for someone else.
5. Do you know see, the style, the feel of the music? It is not just competition, jobs are scarce! Do what you can learn more than other members potential. Take every opportunity possible to see the shows you're interested in (and those you do not), learn about music style, players. When I worked on Les Miserables, I was asked to come back because I spent time learning the show before I arrived the first day, and I knew better than any they had before dep.
6. What is your game like? The musician sponsorship needs to know that you play. You are against other potential dependencies were probably taught by full professors themselves. The Chair has already aware of their ability to play and personality. Rather than take your instrument in a performance and an applicant to hear from you, book a course from the resident player can be a good initiative. A coaching session or two parts, technical and (perhaps) guidance pit game would give the player a chance to hear and work with you (and get paid for it).
7. It is essential you play a variety of instruments. Almost all parts pit wind are doubling and tripling, and if you can flute, picc, sax and clarinet, you ahead. Even with the traditional musicals such as Oklahoma, the parties have the wind to treblers (usually Clarinet sax / flute, but from time to time for clarinet / bassoon or even flute / oboe).
And finally, expect to do some sightseeing before working on a West End show. It's a career rather difficult to drill. I had been touring the UK and Europe for some time to acquire experience as an interpreter before pit to receive regular invitations to play in a West End show.
If you are determined, dedication and focus can help you get where you want to be.
