Saxophone Great

The alto saxophonist Charlie Parker was one of jazz's most influential of all time. Also known as Yardbird or just Bird, Charlie was a pioneer of bebop in the beginning, many of his songs remain standards today.

It may surprise you, but Charlie Parker began playing the saxophone the age of 11 years, but has not been a child prodigy by any stretch of imagination. He joined the school band at age 14, and by one account, was expelled because of his playing bad because of his lack of formal training. Charlie did not let the setbacks bother if not, and once in an interview said that for three to four years, he practiced 15 hours a day. Part of this plan included practice playing the songs of blues that learned in all 12 keys. Meanwhile, Parker's improvisational skills blossomed and he began to develop some ideas music that would give birth to bebop.

In the late thirties, Charlie played with local jazz bands the Kansas City area. Directed sets by Count Basie and Bennie Moten were popular in the area at that time and influenced play Charlie. In 1938, Charlie Parker joined pianist Jay McShann in group, Jay McShann's territory band. The band played throughout the southwest and, occasionally, went to larger markets such as Chicago and New York.

It was with Jay McShann, Parker could play his first professional recording. Bird moved to New York in 1939 and took a job as a dishwasher at Jimmy's Chicken Shack to supplement the income he made with the territory of Jay McShann Band. Pianist Art Tatum often played on the site and its Use of rapid arpeggios would affect play Parker.

In 1942, Charlie Parker, Jay left the band to play with the Earl Hines band. A group that included Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet. A strike by musicians from 1942-1943 it was difficult to document much of what happened during this period. We know, however, that in this year Paker played with a group of young musicians who have embraced the new form of jazz bebop. This group of musicians included not only Parker and Gillespie, but others will soon legends such as Thelonious Monk, Charlie Christian and Kenny Clarke.

During these formative years of the genre, most older jazz musicians set up does not embrace. Some, however, as Coleman Hawkins Benny Goodman, appreciated the new art form, playing and recording with bop stylists. The kind that Charlie Parker, all but invented, had arrived.

Charlie was famous for showing up to concerts without a debt instrument and someone else at the last minute. For this reason, it could be seen playing many different makes and models of sax. These include 6ms Conn, Selmer Model 22s and 26s, and even a plastic Grafton saxophone. In 1947 he was a King Super 20 exclusively for him. He seemed to prefer Brilhart beaks, have used two Ebolin and streamlines Tonalin. According rumors he used Rico reeds hard early in his career, but then spent a 2 ½ in the fifties.
