If someone mentions the collection of coins, what comes to mind?

precious coins, right?

You may be thinking, "collectors need large amounts of money to have a collection of ... MONEY! Could I make money with Parts? "

Or, "What's wrong? Most parts I see are all alike."

Perhaps instead "When I saw coin collection of my cousin I was surprised he could have both so old and so many places different. "

Or, "I know someone who made the deposit on his first car with a piece of his collection!

"I wonder who had that old silver dollar in his pocket? If only this room could talk!"

"If I could have just an old coin ... I want this to be an old piece of gold!

"Hey, what famous penny rare? One thing VDB or others? "

And so on and so forth.

Everyone knows that the parts have value. They are money. You can spend or save, or jam in a machine Coinstar at the grocery store for a little folding money. But when we learn that Some people have a hobby of carefully building a collection of coins, a whole new perception of those little metal disks still present between into force. Coin collectors are (sometimes) normal people in all others.

Unless they have this strong interest, some might say obsession find and acquire odd bits of copper, silver, nickel and even gold. And not only do these collectors add parts of their collections, They take all kinds of information, knowledge - and not only coins, but how and why they were made, and beyond, and what was happening in time and place of its occurrence.

collectors always have a story to tell. And they seem to do really well in school - Especially when it comes to history, but also in economics, or even mathematics.

OK, so it's fun to collect parts. But these parts, and these collections ... Are they useful? Are they worth real money?

It depends on what your interest is. A coin is always worth at least its "face value". For example, a penny is marked "One Cent." At a minimum, it will be useful one cent, or as we say, a "penny".

So rare, or in excellent condition, or both, a coin can have a much higher value as a collector's item. This is especially true if the part is collected by a large group of people - the base collector - whose interest is fueled by a solid body of literature, or a connection to the colorful history.

And remember that if a coin is rare (A few have been hit or few have survived) and if it is in excellent condition, and demand by collectors over many years, and you can identify the current value of the market and buy the part about this value, well, you have what will probably be a good investment piece.

But be prepared to take part for at least 5 years. Ten would be better. Time does good things for the value of a room - particularly if it meets all the criteria above.

The good news is that collectors vary in their approach to the hobby. And nobody can say that another collector has it all wrong!

My background in coins is that I've collected coins since age 11 -- so, more than half a century. Coins have been a pleasant distraction over the years. Though I've never been a coin dealer, I have occasionally sold a coin or two at a nice profit, when the market was right. These experiences have taught me a bit about coin value in the marketplace. But I have to say that my greatest pleasure with coins has been the hooks they have to history and other areas of learning. And, I can never quite get beyond the feeling that, if any of my coins could talk, the stories would be priceless!

The usual formulation is 60 / 20 / 20 copper / nickel / zinc. It is named for its silvery appearance, but contains no elemental silver unless plated.
