Painting the exterior walls of your home with a brush or roller can be a fairly time consuming job. But with a properly-used spray gun you can soon finish the job.
Painting the exterior walls of your house with a brush is hard and tedious work; even if you switch to a roller, things will not be a lot simpler to avoid this drudgery, you can use an alternative method: you can spray the paint onto the walls. It's quicker, easier and, because it tends to give a more even coverage, should give more durable results, particularly on rough surfaces where brushes and rollers tend to leave tiny gaps through which moisture can penetrate to undermine the paint film. If the only experience you have had of spray painting is retouching scratches on a car with an aerosol, then spraying houses may seem very novel. But it isn't a new idea. Specialist contractors have been doing it for years, though their advertising has tended to concentrate on the fact that they use special, very durable paints. In fact you'll find that you don't need special paint; so long as it's of a type suitable for exterior use.
Spraying technique
The basic technique for spraying walls is to aim to cover the surface with a series of barely overlapping stripes. You should keep the gun moving a constant distance from the surface at a constant speed slow enough to ensure good coverage and fast enough to avoid the runs that result from applying too much paint. If you don't get a perfect result at the first attempt you can put things right by applying another coat.
Keep on working as blockages may occur if you stop spraying. When you have to stop clean the equipment thoroughly.
Order of work
As when you are brushing on paint, you should follow the sun round the house so your new paintwork won't be exposed to the full blistering heat of the sun until the next day.
It's certainly worth dividing the area into manageable sections using features such as drainpipes and window bays to provide sensible boundaries. This not only gives natural cues for rest breaks but also helps boost morale. Having completed a section, you'll feel you're really getting somewhere.
Similarly, for the sake of comfort and efficiency, tackle each section working down and across, starting at the top right if you are right-handed, top left otherwise. Overstretching is dangerous so climb down and move the ladder.
You'll have to take the weather into account. Don't work in the rain, or if rain is likely within the next few hours, and don't start work if the surface is wet with rain or dew, give it time to dry out. The heat of the sun can damage new paint and will exacerbate the problem of paint drying in the gun so avoid working when the weather is really scorching.
And don't forget the wind. The stiller the day the easier it will be to spray accurately and the less paint you will waste. With a reasonably powerful modern gun, you should be alright working in anything up to a gentle summer breeze, possibly a bit more. But if you have trouble when you first start work, take a rest and try again later.
