Student Clarinet

There are so many people that inspire me in my life. One of the most important in my life was Earl McCray, my elementary school music teacher high school. He believed in me when I did not know how to believe in me.

Just a little background that puts things in perspective. I say from my heart to inspire others to know they can not only survive difficult situations, but actually thrive.

Picture me as a little girl of 3 years with a finger long dark brown spiral curls down my back. I'm standing in the sun in Kansas by the barn of the farm with my dad. He looks at me and said, you're just a girl d_____. I do not want you. I wanted a boy who would be something interesting. "You can imagine the shock and pain.

I ran to my mother in tears. She confirmed they were both disappointed and they wanted another boy.

Something in me, maybe my pride, stubborn, made a decision that day. I decided to make them proud of me. Instead of rebelling, I became the obedient child ideal. In the days and years, I studied the piano, I read all the books within my reach. I learned the saxophone melody c, then the alto saxophone in E flat and B flat clarinet. I sang in all small groups and choirs. I attended all the plays school. To participate in extracurricular activities after school, I stayed in town with a maiden aunt. In fact, staying with my Aunt Mara was fun. I enjoyed the experience very much.

My music has given me not only creative expression, but also the opportunity to be with people I value. Earl McCray constantly encouraged me to challenge myself. His most important encouragement came when my high school. Earl told me to apply for scholarships at the University of Kansas. I did.

Thank you to Earl and Dale lemon, my high school, I received this coveted award. Imagine my pride when I returned the paperwork and announced that I would University of Kansas. As I was only 17 years, I needed the signature of my parents. My father refused to sign the declaration I was a girl d____ and did not deserve a college education. So much for a scholarship to KU.

To date, I was still more determined to get a college degree. Long story short, I found a ride to Kansas State College in Pittsburgh and ran from the house.

No money, no job and no place to live, but strong-willed determination to succeed. Was it easy? Absolutely not. I managed to find a place to live in the dormitory, the old Willard Hall. I found a job in college. I lived on grilled cheese sandwiches Extra pickles and the College Inn Cafe. Yes, I know it was horrible but nutrition was the cheapest item in the menu.

It during my time at Pittsburg State College that I met my second mentor, Dr. Bill Reilly. Doc, as we affection ally called, was not only a law professor, but a man who is absolutely brilliant. I had the privilege of being his student secretary for 2 years. His vocabulary was so vast that I literally sat down with the dictionary to transcribe his dictation. He was an inspiration in many ways. In fact, we stayed in contact until 3 years ago when he died.

My mentors, my persistence and the grace of God has helped I graduated college in 3 years with a minor double major, double, and a senior appointment to students. No, my parents did not attend my high school or college, but Doc Reilly gave me a prom with all my favorite teachers and special friends. He even gave me long-stemmed roses from his personal rose garden.

Roadblocks, challenges and disappointment can crush us, or make us stronger. I chose to develop and achieve despite the circumstances. Hmmmm, maybe my strength has actually increased from the challenges even he would have with an easier path.

I am grateful for everything in my past. Yes, thankful. He trained me to become the leader strong and successful entrepreneur I am today.

26 years experience as a successful entrepreneur, post-graduate degrees in Communication and Alternate Dispute Resolution, and a proven track record as a teacher, coach and mentor, revealed the success formula.
