Sherlock Holmes and the Calabash Pipe
The image of a man smoking a pipe always gives the impression he thinks, or meditating something churning in his mind. And the longer the bowl, the more these men seem to go in their thoughts. The man who most comes to mind is Sherlock Holmes. One of the most profound thinkers of the 19th century. And even if it was the brainchild of Conan Doyle, we still can not believe that Detective is imaginary. It is so real.
Many habits are deemed to have been Sherlock rivals of his own habits of Mr. Doyle. Most illustrations of the period show the famous detective, Mr. Doyle puffing away on a long-stemmed clay pipe, his tobacco at his side, kept in an old Persian slipper. In those days, the habits of Holmes smoking cigars, cigarettes, pipes, and were not considered a vice. Holmes always described his Bohemian habits.
Why then has the Calabash pipe always been linked with the famous detective? Because at the time, it was used by actors who portrayed characters that smoked pipes. Calabash pipe can not only be seen from afar, it is also a great hand prop to provide poignant lines.
The calabash, or "gourd" is a vegetable, a type of squash. When ripe, it is used in Asia, Africa and Central America as a culinary delicacy. When ripe, or dried, it is pumpkin used as a tool Music for the transport of water or smoke tobacco.
An old style calabash pipe is made of a portion of the calabash gourd-like a horn. Inside the wide end of the bottle is inserted a removable bowl, as a bowler hat backwards. A cork gasket keeps the bowl in place. The bowl is usually made of stone meerschaum, but sometimes you can find the porcelain bowl or wood. Some briar pipes Calabash older have a silver cover, but not today. On the narrow end of the squash, a cylinder of heather is inserted, many times covered with a silver band. This is the real stem, where the tenon of the rod is inserted. This is necessary because the material of the gourd is too fragile to support so many insertions and removals from the rod when the pipe must be cleaned. The stem is usually curved, vulcanite or lucite.

The Doctor's Products Doctor Slick Cork Treatment $2.75 More InfoAbout CorkCork is a wood product and as such needs special treatment. Your cork will last longer, remain supple and will not peel, chip or disintegrate if treated properly. Traditional "cork grease" is a petroleum based product that clogs the pores, fine structure and over time reduces the corks ability to absorb moisture, compress and rebound, ultimately leads to disintegration of the cork itself and leads to loosening the glue holding the cork on the tenon. The Idea behind the productThe idea for the product came during a visit to Italy and Emperor Hadrian's Villa outside Rome. Clay jars containing olive oil were found in perfect condition - including their contents - after 1500 years. The jars were sealed with native corks which appeared to be in wonderful condition, covered with bees wax and pine resin. How does it work?We all know that cork needs to maintain a certain moisture content to remain soft and supple from the wine industry where bottles are stored upright and the cork becomes brittle and cracks when you insert a corkscrew. In order to make the product fulfill it's job of smoothly lubricating the cork we were fortunate to get some great advice from an old Asian herbalist that suggested we use a special extract of the Slippery Elm Tree Bark. It worked so well that we call this additional ingredient - Nature's Teflon(TM). With Nature's Teflon(TM) the product is an ideal cork treatment which is slippery but not greasy, sticky, or smelly and is kind to cork. |

To Cork or Not To Cork $13.99 In Judgment of Paris , George M. Taber masterfully chronicled the historic 1976 wine tasting when unknown California wines defeated top French ones, marking a major turning point in wine history. Now he explores the most controversial topic in the world of wine: What product should be used to seal a bottle? Should it be cork, plastic, glass, a screwcap, or some other type of closure still to be invented? For nearly four centuries virtually every bottle of wine had a cork in it. But starting in the 1970s, a revolution began to topple the cork monopoly. In recent years, the rebellion has been gathering strength. Belatedly, the cork industry began fighting back, while trying to retain its predominant position. Each year 20 billion closures go onto wine bottles, and, increasingly, they are not corks. The cause of the onslaught against cork is an obscure chemical compound known as TCA. In amounts as low as several parts per trillion, the compound can make a $400 bottle of wine smell like wet newspaper and taste equally bad. Such wine is said to be "corked." While cork's enemies urge people to throw off the old and embrace new closures, millions of wine drinkers around the world are still in love with the romance of the cork and the ceremony of opening a bottle. With a thorough command of history, science, winemaking, and marketing, Taber examines all sides of the debate. Along the way, he collects a host of great characters and pivotal moments in the production, storage, and consumption of wine, and paints a truly satisfying portrait of a wholly intriguing controversy. As Australian winemaker Brian Croser describes it: "It's scary how passionate people can be on this topic. Prejudice and extreme positions have taken over, and science has often gone out the window." |
