In his Systema Naturae, Linnaeus named the bird then known in America, and created a standard that could later ornithologists agree or disagree. They have been doing since. Linnaeus gave a Latin name for the genus and another for cash and, if necessary, to designate a third subspecies. The Swedish naturalist, however, never saw the bird he called America. He never knew the iridescent blue-green-purple one indigo bunting among wild roses, nor the joy of singing Brown Thrashers, one morning in April. It is from the descriptions of other men, from the beginning drawings and dead specimens, he appointed several of our birds.
All those who are determined by Linnaeus bear his name or its abbreviation-L immediately after the scientific name. His signature is a powerful in the history of American ornithology. As the 19th century opened, the discovery of birds America has become a major exercise in men of science. This is a continent of wildlife that was little known. anything had hardly been scientifically unearthed on birds, mammals and plants living within the most famous coast. And there were few men who could not be satisfied with the laboratory, or with a skin of dried bird collected by someone else. They were birders outdoor setting in which the spirit of adventure and discovery, and that the discomfort of the initial conditions are nothing if only there were birds.
These men d'Alexander Wilson and George Ord in the early 1800s, two of them before and overlapping work of Audubon, for the two young men in 1939 who discovered the story of the warbler-Sutton did as they loved birds after bird list for America. Incongruous as it sounds At first, it is particularly appropriate that men's names are attached to the names of birds. In every name there is a reason, the back story of each one. They are not idle securities; not political acts. They were the result of hard work, careful study and exploration in the years 1800 (some earlier) and today.
At the time of Wilson, the spring migration was a moment of madness feverish search for new species. Birds were classified as never before pulled out the old paths of migration. In this way, Wilson revealed many new birds, including many of our warblers. He found the warbler Nashville near Nashville, Tennessee, the Tennessee Warbler found on the banks Cumberland; found the logs in Connecticut warbler. The name of the list of birds today, and many birds of this solitary Scot, who learned life stories of over four hundred birds at a time when little or nothing has been printed to guide him in his work.
