Maori are the indigenous peoples of New Zealand. Like all cultures, Maori have expressed artistically. Maori, however, have no word for "art." The traditional expert or tohunga, sculpture and weaving does not create a work of art. They are only the vessel used by the gods to express in material form. This means that all the sculptures, weavings and other artistic activities have been charged with spiritual power, or mana. The act of creating a sculpture or other item was sacred, a gift from Tangaroa, the god of the sea
Sculpture and has been is yet much of Maori culture. Wood was used for cutting flutes, complex messages, and war canoes with elaborate carvings, treasure chests and wall panels. whale bone and cow bone is used to make flutes and symbolic jewelry. Reservoirs are also carvings for personal adornment. The symbols shown are deep religious and cultural significance. The Koru or spiral, is the symbol of life and rebirth. Tikis are often cut in personal songs on the posts and wall panels to represent fertility and protection. They can be worn or displayed special occasions.
Sculptures of sea creatures and tails of whales, an animal very special for the Maoris, are also frequent. Another common topic is Manaia sculpture, a figure with a bird's head. Another is Marakihau, a sea monster that has taken human form. Elaborate ornaments hook bone were carved to symbolize prosperity, abundance and fertility. Today, sculptors still new skills transmitted from generation to generation.
Weaving was a necessary business. From Plant robust New Zealand flax, Maori have learned to weave coats, skirts, baskets, floor mats, and sails. These textiles were dyed and decorated. Some were used in everyday tasks and some were reserved for sacred use. The weaving of fine coats was the pinnacle of women's art. They are often combined with linen dog fur and feathers. Before the moa was extinct moa feathers were often used for decoration. Students today still study the weaving traditions. After attending the weaving school, they are not diplomas. Graduate is the work they produce.
The Maori also have a living history of music and dance. Rotorua Visitors can attend concerts at noon that introduce them to culture. Traditional dances like Poi dance, the haka, or war dance and the complex Tititorea (stick games) are made. Maori have unique musical instruments, including putangitangi, or a bowl of hissing. This is a small clay bowl attached to a small hole at the top. Whistling Near the upper orifice produces a sad echo. The wheel is spinning puritorito or a wooden disk with string threaded through the center. The disc is rotated in the center, and then the strings are tightened to create a sound like wind blowing through the reeds. Sound waves of this instrument were often used to loosen phlegm in babies. The flute koauau or short flute carved from a hollow stem of flax. The end was covered by a finger, then the musician in the opening whistle, creating a variety of tones.
